I took this shot of Haley outdoors at Sakura-Con 2011. It doesn’t look like it, but this was taken in the middle of a large crowd of people. There were hundreds of people all around, but I chose the angle and lighting to make it so that none of that would be in the picture. Two of Haley’s friends were assisting me with this, with one standing on each side of her holding flash units and umbrellas so we could get this nice light on her. The idea was to make it look like the character is in a cage, but in reality this is a gazebo in a garden. The bright lights make the background look relatively dark, almost like it could be night, but we actually took this picture in the early afternoon. One of the things I really like about this — besides the amazing costume of course — is how different we made the scene look from what was really there.
Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.
Tom’s behind the scenes notes:
This is Nichole cosplaying as Date Masamune from Sengoku Basara. This was a rainy day, but it wasn’t raining too hard. I chose to do a shot like this because the minimal background, with just a hint of the doors showing behind her, really makes the costume stand out. It has such vivid colors and strong shapes, it really looks like something straight from the anime.
