Cosplay Interview with Haley P. (Ms. November)

Thank you for being the November 2012 photo on the J LHLS Cosplay Calendar!

What’s the name of your character in the calendar?

Ciel Phantomhive

What’s the source (manga/anime/whatnot) of this character?

He’s from an anime and a manga called Black Butler (or Kuroshitsuji for those picky fans).

What inspired you to cosplay this character?

It would be more of a challenge for me to cosplay as him since we’re not at all alike but that only made me want to cosplay as him more. We also didn’t have a Ciel in our group of friends.

Could you tell us a little about how you made the costume?

Goodwill shopping! You can’t see his shorts but I just got a pair of fancy pants and cut and sown them to the right length. The top is a basic white blouse I got from the store and the jacket I found at a friend’s house. We didn’t know whose it was so I claimed it. And then it’s just a simple bow tie I found within my drawers.

What name(s) do you do cosplay under?

Haley and Lexyah.

If this is an alias, what inspired it? If you use more than one alias, what inspired them?

Well Haley is my name (and what most people know me as) and Lexyah was inspired by the game Kingdom Hearts. The members of Organization XIII (a group of people from the game) are all nobodies and their names are their some bodies name rearranged but with an X in it too. So if you take out the X in Lexyah and rearrange it, you’ll get Haley.

What is your favorite character to cosplay? Or these characters if more than one?

I really like cosplaying as Roxas from the Kingdom Hearts series and as Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji.

What’s the source (manga/anime/whatnot) of this character? Or these characters if more than one?

Roxas is from a video game and a manga (which isn’t that good since they leave out a lot of details but it’s alright). And Ciel is from a manga and an anime.

What inspired you to cosplay this character? Or these characters if more than one?

For Roxas, we are the same person practically. So for me cosplaying him, I wouldn’t have to change my attitude much.

For Ciel, when I started reading it, I fell in love with him and I just really wanted to cosplay as him. He’s the complete opposite of me but that’s what makes it a lot of fun cosplaying as him.

What character or characters has been most challenging to cosplay? And why?

Definitely Ciel. He’s such a little heartless brat and he never smiles. So for me, trying not to smile all day around my friends is really hard for me since they make me laugh all the time!

Could you tell us a little about how you make your costumes?

Goodwill everything! Most of the time you could just find things that would just need slight modifications in Goodwill and, to me, it shows that you’re committed to cosplaying as that character if one has to hunt down every piece for the character. It also saves you a lot of money instead of buying the cosplays online.

How long have you been doing cosplay?

About three years now. It all started in the summer of 2009.

How did you get interested in it?

I was just getting into anime and manga because of my friend. The year before she went to her first con (Kumoricon ’08) and she told me all about it and how she cosplayed as L. I decided then I wanted to cosplay as all these characters that I loved.

Are you in any cosplay groups or clubs?

It’s mainly just my group of friends but I am also part of the Youthful Otakus.

What conventions do you go to?

Kumoricon and Wonder North West.

What’s attractive to you about these conventions?

My friend told me about the fun she had at her first con and I thought it would be fun to go to Kumoricon. Wonder North West is a pretty cheap con so it was worth checking out.

Do you have a cosplay story — happy story, horror story, uplifting, artistic story — you can share with our readers?

Last summer, my friends wanted to do this cosplay contest for 2010’s Kumoricon. So all summer we worked on our skit that we were going to do and we worked on our cosplays. We were going to be called the Not So Deadly Sins with our group of six people. It was a lot of fun working on the skit and the cosplays but we didn’t have enough practice to go perform the skit so we dropped out. We still worked on the cosplays so we could do a photoshoot with them since we worked hard on them.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to get into the cosplay scene?

Do it. It’s a lot of fun and you’ll meet new people. You don’t just have to cosplay as someone from a manga, anime, or video game. You could cosplay as anyone.

Are there any links you’d like to share with our readers? That’s where all of my cosplay photos go to.

Thank you, Haley.
