Cosplay Interview with Gryffinclaw Princess (Ms. May 2011)

Thank you for being the May 2011 photo on the J LHLS Cosplay Calendar!

What’s the name of your character in the calendar?

Sasuko Uchiha (Sasuke Uchiha – Original Name)

What’s the source (manga/anime/whatnot) of this character?

Naruto Shippuden (This is the Sexy no Jutsu version of Sasuke Uchiha)

What inspired you to cosplay this character?

I used to be a big Naruto Shippuden fan until the fan base ruined it for me. But this year I decided to not let them get to me and I decided to just cosplay one of my favorite characters anyways.

I decided upon Sasuke because I enjoy his backstabbing, emo ways. Naruto always annoyed me so to see him get smacked around a bit by Sauske always put a smile to my face. The reason I did his female version is because I lack the abilities to bind my chest while continuing to be able to breath.

Could you tell us a little about how you made the costume?

With a lot of determination and time. The costume is completely hand made except for the strapless bra. I even put the shoes together!

Mostly it was sewn with my sewing machine but a bit of the shoes were put together with my trusty glue gun.

Sadly, it’s not up to my standards and I am going to end up remaking the pants to make them longer so I don’t look so short.

What name(s) do you do cosplay under?

I used to cosplay under Kisitiene but now I am mostly known as Gryffinclaw Princess

If this is an alias, what inspired it? If you use more than one alias, what inspired them?

Kisitiene is actually my name in Mayan. In 6th grade we had to learn about the Mayan temples and their history. One of our assignments was to change our real names into the Mayan equivalent. Oh, and it’s pronounced key-stan but no one ever says it like that.
As for Gryffinclaw Princess, it is something more recent. My old cosplay account got lost when my old e-mail account was hacked and I needed to make a whole new account. I am a Harry Potter nerd to a pretty good extent and on all the tests I took I ended up being in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw house. If you put those two together, you get Gryffinclaw! As for the Princess part, I’m not exactly certain what made me put Princess at the end of it but I did and I think it has a nice ring to it.

How long have you been doing cosplay?

I have been cosplaying since I was a little girl but as far as conventions go, 2010 was my third year.

How did you get interested in it?

Outside of conventions, I got into it through Halloween. I always wanted to be a Sailor Scout and they were pretty much my idols as a little girl. Thus, one year I begged my mother and she made me a Sailor Mercury outfit. That started the whole thing with cosplaying every Halloween.

Inside conventions, I had wanted to go to one ever since I learned about their existence I lived on an island in Alaska and the closest convention was on the mainland. Finally when I moved to Washington I got the chance to go.

Are you in any cosplay groups or clubs?

Sort of but not really…

I cosplay with my best friend who is like a sister to me every year (FateChooseMe).

However, I am the leader of the Fun Sized Guild which is a group of cosplayers 5’3″ and under.

What conventions do you go to?

I have only ever gone to KumoriCon but I will be attending AkiCon next month for my first time and I am hoping to be able to attend SakuraCon as well.

What’s attractive to you about these conventions?

The people. I love being around people who are just like me and won’t judge me in any way because of how I dress or what I like.

Do you have a cosplay story — happy story, horror story, uplifting, artistic story — you can share with our readers?

Well, this is sort of cosplay related but more so con related but it happened because I cosplay.

At KumoriCon 2010 I attended the forum meet up panel which is, obviously, for those of us who are on the KCon Forums online.

On the KForums people refer to me as Gryff, a short version of my forum name (Gryffinclaw Princess). However, there is another person on there with the forum name of Griff_the_dragoon who goes by Griff. He started to call me G2 or “the other Gryff” when talking to me or about me.

The first time we met in person was at this forum meet up panel. To cut a long story short, we are now going out and I couldn’t be happier than I am now.

I know to a lot of people it may not seem like much but my adventures in cosplay helped me meet the most perfect guy I could ever ask for.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to get into the cosplay scene?

Start simple, but not with the crowd. A lot of people go to their first con cosplaying what everyone else is cosplaying so they will fit in. Don’t. Cosplay what you want to cosplay and make sure it’s something you like. Just going with the crowd won’t make you happy because most likely it won’t be a cosplay you want to continue with.

As for simple, I wouldn’t go all out on your first round. Pick a character who won’t require hours upon hours of work. Save the hard stuff for when you feel comfortable at the cons you plan to attend and gain some buddies who will be there to support you when you get frustrated and want to trash the project. But above all, never give up! Even if you don’t like the outcome at first, you can always try again and alter things in the future.

Are there any links you’d like to share with our readers?

Shameless advertising FTW, yes? – This is a project I am a part of called Forever Underhill. I play the role of Titania, Queen of the Fairies. – My newly made Deviant Art where all cosplay photos are going to be posted.

Thank you.
