We’re very sorry, but we won’t be doing this calendar for the foreseeable future

However, there might be a book of Thomas Good’s photography someday, and the news about that will be here.

Thank you.

December 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Interview with Ms. December.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

I really liked this costume.  Haley D. wore this to a previous cosplay meetup, and then again here in this photo during Sakura-Con.  The tricky thing about this shot was that the whole area was very crowded, it was swarming with other cosplayers and other photographers who were also taking cosplay photos.  So it was hard to find a cool place to take a photo that wasn’t already in use, and where there wouldn’t be other photo shoots going on in the background.  So I lined up this shot to hide that.  If you could see the areas just out of view to the left, right, and above the frame, and behind the various walls, there would be lots of people standing there.  I couldn’t completely eliminate everyone though, so there was one person standing in the distant background, who I removed from the scene in Photoshop.

I think Haley’s poses work very well, because she never seems like she is “trying hard to pose,” it always looks to me more like a candid moment.

November 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Interview with Ms. November 2012.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

I like how it looks like Haley is emerging from the shadows in this one.  She is keeping in character, so she looks serious and maybe even a bit threatening here, which is funny to me, because in real life she is a fun and friendly person.  She has been to quite a few photo shoots, and she always seems comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

October 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

This was the most complicated scene in the calendar, because it is three different photos put together in Photoshop.  I took a photo of each model separately against a white background, and combined them with  a third photo I took of the building.  In reality, Kori was not jumping, she was standing on a board, only a few inches off the ground.

All the lighting effects here were added later, mostly by painting them in by hand in Photoshop.  The photo of the building was taken during the day, so I changed it to look like night.  I took this approach because I didn’t think it would be possible to do something like this as a single real shot, but I wanted to try to create this type of scene.

September 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

Shay and Maddy also appeared (separately) in the 2011 calendar.  They are cosplaying as Alois and Claude from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) We took this photo in my living room.  The curtains worked great as a background for a scene from this series, but it wasn’t planned in advance; those are just the curtains that are always there.

August 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

This photo of Mike is unusual in two ways.  First, it is the only photo in the calendar that does not use any type of artificial lighting.  In this case the sunlight was coming from a great angle and I didn’t feel it even needed any fill flash.  The other interesting thing about it is that he didn’t originally intend to pose for a photo here.  I was with a group of cosplayers, as we were all walking back to our cars after taking some pictures in the park.  I happened to look over at Mike, and I saw that the light and the background looked really good right there, and it suited his costume very well, so I asked him to stay there for a minute while I took a few more photos.

July 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Interview with Ms. July.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

This is Haley cosplaying as Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service.  She told me that she wanted to do some photos where it would look like she was flying on the broom.  She is really up in the air, but it’s because she has just jumped from a bench that is off to the left.  Haley did a great job of holding a very nice and relaxed looking pose for a split second in mid-air, and that makes it look less like she’s jumping, and makes the picture work.

June 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

This is the only picture in this calendar that was taken in a photo studio.  The weather was very cold and rainy, and so rather than trying an outdoor shoot, we rented some time in a studio for a cosplay meet-up.  The funny thing about this place was that even though it was great, the alley leading to the entrance was somewhat scary-looking, especially to people who hadn’t been there before.  As Robin walked hesitantly to the entrance, I suddenly opened the door to run out to my car to gather more equipment, and so we startled each other and then laughed about it.

May 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

This is Sahara, cosplaying as Kagura from Gintama.  I’ve worked with her a lot, and she has also assisted me on some of my photo shoots.  She is very creative and full of great ideas. When she is modeling she will improvise all kinds of cool poses, and I just try to keep up by taking the photos.  You can’t tell from this one photo, but during the session she did a huge variety of poses ranging from very serious to very funny.   This was a hot sunny day and we found a nice shady spot under a tree for this shot.

April 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

We did this photo indoors at the Seattle Convention Center, at Sakura-Con.  I had previously taken photos of Charly at Kumoricon, when she was cosplaying as Spain from Hetalia, and one of those photos was in the 2011 calendar.  This original character has a completely different look, and I like seeing the variety that a cosplayer can create.  Charly is a very good dancer, too. Thank you for being the November 2012 photo on the J LHLS Cosplay Calendar!

What’s the name of your character in the calendar?

Ciel Phantomhive

What’s the source (manga/anime/whatnot) of this character?

He’s from an anime and a manga called Black Butler (or Kuroshitsuji for those picky fans).

What inspired you to cosplay this character?

It would be more of a challenge for me to cosplay as him since we’re not at all alike but that only made me want to cosplay as him more. We also didn’t have a Ciel in our group of friends. Continue reading

March 2012

Where to buy. $13.00 each, but order 5 or more, they’re $10.50 each.

Tom’s behind the scenes notes:

This photo was taken at a cosplay picnic get-together.  The models came up with the idea of doing this pose where they are both looking out from behind the tree.  Right before this, we had done a lot of other photos where it had taken many attempts to get the lighting and the camera settings to look OK, but then when we did this one it just seemed to work right away.
